Default accented characters = black diamond question marks

    Hi

I loaded an instance of SCE 5.2.0e with Synolia French language pack (for 5.2.0e)
on a web host (just host) and am experiencing an issue with accented characters
for users that choose french as their default UI language.
    Settings:
    Default Export Character Set:ISO_8859_1
    Collation : utf8_general_ci

The letters containing accents present in shortcut menu links, admin page item links,
and data field names have all been replaced with black diamond shaped question mark
    characters.

The data itself, that appears in the fields, is properly displayed, accents an all.
The text on the various pages, tab names also appears properly, with accents.

I've checked the MySQL database, ans everything is set to utf8_general_ci

I have tried adding [AddDefaultCharset utf8] to .htaccess without success.

    Any ideas ?

    Thanks

    Hi

I replaced the Synolia language pack with the one provided by Carrenet
and guess what, it wasn't perfect but the accented characters were a
    lot more present than before.

This leads me to believe that the issue was in fact directly linked to the
language pack itself rather than to the host that is harbouring my SCE.

Whatever you see on the screens (apart from data) is NOT stored in the database but as language files in each subdirectory (modules, include to name the most important ones). Usually there is a subdirectory 'language' that holds all installed language files which are named e.g. fr_fr.lang.php or en_us.lang.php
Under normal circumstances the lang packs are encoded in utf-8 which is understood by most browsers and operating systems.
I quite honestly do not believe that Synolia offers a lang pack that doesn't fit for a French environment - they are doing this for too long and quite well from what I know. So you might want to check you r locale and browser setting.

    Hi

    Thanks for your reply

I have experienced this issue with my present installation from different machines
(OSs even) and from different sites. When testing version 5.2c in a SuSE 11.1 virtualbox
    environment all was fine.

I included the following image taken from the home page to illustrate the issue
while using the CarreNet translation package :

One can see that accents are properly displayed around this image except
for the ones in the shortcut menu itself. Most shortcut menus appear correctly
    with the accents.

The only options I can see concerning language and character sets are :

System Local Settings : [Default language] : Francais
    [Default Export Character Set] UTF8
    [database collation] : utf8_general_ci

    User preferences : [Import/Export Character Set: ] UTF8

Are there any other parameters that can influence the character set in use ?

    Thanks for your help

    Ok my bad

I have discovered what was causing this dysfunction.

To save myself some time, when I reinstalled SCE, I simply copied over
parts of the custom folders that belonged to my previous setup.

This time I did so with a finer selection than before, and apparently that
    sufficed.

I suppose one could say that shortcuts aren't always time savers !

    Voilà
