Question access to sugar from internet

    Hi everyone,
Please excuse muy ignorance about not only networks but also about sugar! However I have been given the task of
granting access to Sugar from outside. I have been told by my ISP that I can have one fixed ip address attached to their router and I am presuming that I will be dynamically allocated an IP address on my subnet. My question is, will I be able to run Sugar on a dynamically allocated IP address, whilst my domain name (eg www.iamslow.com) is attached to the IP address of the router.

If you deign to enlighten me..it woiuld be great!
    Thanks
    Andrew

I'd hate to come across as condescending but with that limited of knowledge of networks and the internet, you'd be much better off hiring a quality consultant to come set this up for you. You risk opening up not only your Sugar instance but you entire network if this is not done correctly.

It should have a lot to do with you firewall and port forwarding and such. If not you're about to be wide open to a hacked box. I and my people here know what we're doing and our people have to connected via their VPN connection to get at Sugar.

Jerry makes some good points about security.

But, assuming you want to learn, if you want a good introduction on how to set up a server for Sugar, without it picking up a dynamic IP, buy a copy of Mark Alexander Bain's "SugarCRM Deveoper's Manual". ISBN 978-1-847192-06-6

Chapter 7 contains a detailed guide to server set-up, including configuration of the server's IP address etc.

It's written for version 4, but most of it is still applicable, especially this chapter.

    Good luck!
