action=Popup question (accessing sugar modules from external apps)

I'm looking at integrating SugarCRM with some other web apps, and I'd like to be able to pull in a single Sugar module at a time; the "action=Popup" mangling of the URL gives me what I'm looking for, except that the links within the page don't appear to do anything.

Is there some magic I'm missing? I'd love to be able to have users who will use one feature of Sugar consistently not have to enter Sugar in toto every time; I'm more or less looking to "widgetize" access to the underlying backends (Sugar, etc.) via CMS.

I know that portal dashlets will let me do something similar from within Sugar; however, I'm looking for the maximum flexibility I can get.

Is what I'm doing possible, or am I spitting in the wind?

I've looked at this, and it's sort of an option-of-last-resort (i.e., myself or a coworker reinventing the wheel, as SugarCRM's already done the frontend work); I was hoping that it would be possible to use modules as widgets, semi-seperate from SugarCRM itself.
