Activities Module not doing anything at all Version 6.1.1 (Build 5512)

Hello,
I am a first time user of Sugarcrm and have just installed it on to our server. Installation went without a hitch. However, the Activities Module simply does not seem to do anything at all. I have tried the following when trying to schedule a new meeting
- Creating a meeting for myself only & saving
- Myself and other users & saving
- Emailing other users
In all case, the button doesn't seem to do anything apart from change colour when I hover the mouse over it. The only button that seems to work is the 'Cancel'.
I have filled in all the asterisked fields and can't figure out what I am doing wrong. Do I need to activate this module elsewhere. I think I am missing something really obvious.

just noticed that the 'Sitemap' button does not work either on the top right of the screen and I have no 'errors on page' flagged.
