Add Styles to Email Template

In the Email Template editor there is drop-down for styles but no styles are set up

If I add styles using the editor in html mode then save it the styles get commented out

Is there anyway I can use styles in a template and if not can I get rid of the styles dropdown as it is confusing to my users

It used to work in 5.2
