Add target List as a custom field

Yes you are correct.

It already exist a relationship Many to Many between Target Lists and Contacts, so you should need to create a new one.
By the way: what do you like to accomplish? Can you describe your requirement in detail?

yes you are correct. What I want to achieve is, when I create a contact or lead, I want to add it to a target list whilst I create the record and make a madatory field if poss. I dont want to do this after I create the record as most will forget to follow this workflow / procedure.

So you can create a Target List non-db field into extended vardefs, required.
So you can add it into editview.
Create a logic_hook after_save in order to relate this new contact to selected target list if defined.
