Added Fields Don't Update

I'm a newbie with Sugar CE 5.5.ORC4 and have just about completed our setup, but I'm having one particular challenge.

I need to add a field to Accounts to allow our sales people to filter with a simple yes/no so a checkbox field will do the job nicely. So using Studio I built a new field and loaded it into Edit View, Detail View and Avanced Search. The field appears in all 3 as I would expect. However, if I then try to edit an account by checking the box in Edit View, the tick appears but then disappears when I save the change, and isn't there when I go to Detail View. I have rebuilt the field several times but get the same result every time.

In desperation, I have tried building the field as a dropdown and as a text field, but the same thing happens every time - I update the field but the update is wiped when I save.

Am I a dummy doing something obviously wrong here? Please help, because this should be a simple operation and I am at my wits' end.

First up ... if you are considering production use of sugarcrm DO NOT use 5.5. It's a release candidate, not a stable production version. Use 5.2(k) for production ... it's pretty stable.

You may find that the problems you describe disappear using 5.2.

Uh oh! I'm at this company for a short time to help them with a few sales issues and when I got here they had already downloaded Sugar & I wasn't aware that we didn't have the production version. Looks like today's task is set out for me.
