Adding another "opportunities"

How hard would it be for me to add another entity to sugar like the opportunities?
I want to associate software to an account and let people see that the account has purchased "Software" They should then be able to click on the "Software" and just like the opportunities, have a detail page pop up where they can see the serial number of the program, what version it is, ect.

Has this been done in a module yet, or will I have to attempt to hack something together?

This could be done with notes in the History section of the contacts via notes or in the opertunity under history with notes.

Yes, it could be done with the notes, but we would prefer to have the data more organized.
Maybe if there was some way to make a new "history" section named software?
The company also sells machines, so whatever I end up doing for the software sales people, I'll need to clone (with changes to the field names) for the machine guys.
The idea is to be able to click on the detail view of an account and see that they own such and such machines and have software A version x to control this machine and software B version y to control the other.
With our current system that Sugar CRM should eventually replace, we are forced to put all this information in one place ( as you recommended) and though it worked for a while, now the data is getting out of control and it is easy to lose track of the customer's latest purchase.

The Pro and Enterprise version has a products and quotes module that would allow this type of tie in to the contact/Accounts/and oppertunities. Otherwise you would have to probably create a new module to track licensing that could be tied to Contact/Accounts/Oppertunities.
