Adding a Field and Drop Down

I read this http://www.sugarcrm.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17762 and to follow it.
The problem is the field doesnt get displayed, I dont get a text box with a label for the field.
It seems it creates the DropDown ok, but it doesnt get attached/displayed.

I have been wrestling with this issue for 8 hours, is there some step by step guide I can follow?

By the way, would it be the user account I am using does not have the right to add/aletr views?
Is there any other way to achive this? Can I recover the admin login/pass (the previous developer left without leaving a doc)
