Am I missing something? Contact categories

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, but I can't seem to find a way to assign a contact to categories. Any hints would be very much appreciated. For example, I might want to have a contact named "Joe Cool" and assign him to the "author" category and the "new customer" category.
