Archiving old accounts

Does anyone know how to mark an account or opportunity as inactive, or is it even possible? We are trying to clean up our system and we do not want to delete old files in case we need them in the future, we just want to archive them. Is this possible to do?

I defined a custom checkbox inactive_c with default 0.

Then I created custom view.list.php in which the additional condition inactive_c == 0 was added to each query.

Even some other modification in the code were necessary - so it is no upgrade save way... but it works.
