    Default Backups/Restore questions

    Seeking advice on the following.

    (1) Does the GUI backup include file attachments uploaded, and elements put into the cache folder ?

    (2) Is there a recommended way to make this backups periodic ? with or without gui, or scripted via cron etc... linux

    (3) Is there a recommended restore way to:
    (a) Restore a backup to same system ?
    (b) Restore to 2nd system to replicate 1st system ? Scripts, etc...

    Hi,

Since I'm doing this every day (restoring my demo version) the only advice I can give: Forget all 'internal' backups. Run two cron jobs, one that backs up your Sugar directory and the other one for you DB. In case of a crash or (in my case) a bad demo user - it takes 2 1/2 minutes to restore the entire system to its pre-backup state. Use Webmin to get the settings done, it's very easy and manageable even for people like me.

Yeah in the CE Edition, v5.0.0b I also do NOT see a restore BUTTON(s). Thus the need to ask the question of how useful the backup is and the contents :+)

Question: what would you do with a restore button if your Sugar application crashed? The internal backup just creates a zip file of your application directory. And even if your application still works - it's a bit hard to restore a program that's currently running.

    roblaus is right.

The Sugar backup in the admin section generates a complete zip-file of the web-application.
You restore it by unzipping it to the original webdirectory (apache should then be stopped!).

The database backup must be performed in an extra step and generates a plain readable sql-file which can be "restored" by a mySQL Query Browser or phpMyAdmin window.

We currently manage around 40 SugarCRM installations. From experience, I second roblaus's recommendation to set up CRON jobs (or scheduled tasks) to backup the database and Sugar files, rather than use the Sugar backup features.

Most of the web interfaces for managing servers offer tools to simplify scheduling and backup. Webmin works well and is free.
