Bounced Emails - does anything happen next?

So I've got bounce processing working, they are getting marked as bounced, unless the bounce comes from postmaster@ ;-)

What I was wondering though is as follows;

Does anything else happen after a bounced email has been assigned to the contact/target it was sent to?
i.e. are emails delivered in perpetuity or are they marked as invalid after say 5 attempts?
Also, does sugar ever empty the bounce inbox?

You seem to have had more luck with Bounce Processing that most of us. I've replied to another thread on this topic. Maybe we can pool our intelligence and come up with a solution:
