Default Call Time Pass By error

Hi I am upgrading from 4.2.1b to 4.5. During the pre-flight check I get this:

    ############
    Detected Settings Show Detected Settings
Minimum PHP Version Unsupported PHP Version Installed: ( ver 4.4.2-1+b1 )
    XML Parsing OK
cURL Module Not found: Sugar Scheduler will run with limited functionality.
    MBStrings Module OK
IMAP Module Not found: InboundEmail and Campaigns (Email) require the IMAP libraries. Neither will be functional.
    PHP Setting: Safe Mode OK
PHP Setting: Call Time Pass By Reference Allow Call Time Pass Reference is Off (please enable in php.ini)
PHP Setting: Memory Limit OK (Unlimited)
    Location of php.ini /etc/php4/apache/php.ini
    ############

Although it says my PHP version is unsupported it is green. The "Call Time Pass By Reference" is red, I have checked my php.ini and it is switched on, does 4.5 only support php5? I was unable to find documentation on that.

    Thanks
    Brendan

Thumbs down 4.5.0a still has Call Time Pass By error

    Detected Settings Show Detected Settings
Minimum PHP Version Unsupported PHP Version Installed: ( ver 4.4.2-1+b1 ) <-- in green
    XML Parsing OK
cURL Module Not found: Sugar Scheduler will run with limited functionality.
    MBStrings Module OK
IMAP Module Not found: InboundEmail and Campaigns (Email) require the IMAP libraries. Neither will be functional.
    PHP Setting: Safe Mode OK
PHP Setting: Call Time Pass By Reference Allow Call Time Pass Reference is Off (please enable in php.ini)
PHP Setting: Memory Limit OK (Unlimited)
    Location of php.ini /etc/php4/apache/php.ini

I assume its the Call Time Pass By error preventing me from upgrading, can someone please assist or tell me if 4.5.0 only supports php5? I couldn't find requirements outlining this.
