Can reminders be generated for tasks?

Right now, I can see emails being sent when a new task is assigned to someone. However, since some tasks are very time sensitive, I'd like to be able to produce a popup window type of reminder for specific tasks at a specific time (e.g. an hour before the tasks must be complete - as in when the person responsible for it might have to send an email or SMS message at a specific time). Thus, this is a situation where the notification/reminder has to be sent at a specific time other than when the tasks is first created and assigned.

Can this be done? If so, how?

It can be done but in an non upgrade-safe way.
You must update:
include/javascript/jsAlert.php (non upgrade-safe);
create the reminder fields on Tasks, just like existing in Calls and Meetings;
Add these fields on detailviewdefs.php and editviewdefs.php, including the javascript events.
