Can you have categories for Contacts

Greetings,
I am new to surgarcrm. Is there a way to categorize contacts based on product lines ?

ie custom joe is a widgetlineA customer ?

You could do this a couple ways but the easiest is simply to add a custom field with your categories. You could add this as a drop down list using the Admin -> Studio

You can also modify one of the standard field dropdown lists if you are not using them. (And don't planm to in the future!)

A custom field is likely the best. Make sure to add it to all views and include in the search and listviews since you want to break customers apart using it.
