Can you import in to an increased size field?

In the process of importing our SalesForce data in to Sugar I discovered that some of our opportunities have names that are longer than 50 characters (the maximum length of a Sugar opportunity name). I found this helpful thread:

which explained how easy it was to increase the size of the field, but even after I upped the field's max length to 100 (more than enough for our opportunities) I still got "String too long to fit in the field" when I tried to import.

Are there any further steps I need to take (beyond changing the DB column and varddefs.php file) to let Sugar know that the field's length has increased? Or is it just impossible to import opportunities with names longer than 50 characters?

I ended up just shortening all the >50 char names, so this is no longer an issue for me (although if someone knows the answer it might be helpful to post it for anyone else who has this issue).

Can you not go into Studio and increase the size there? I believe the import tool uses the restrictions set at the php layer (vardefs file) first rather then the db layer next.
