Can you trigger a workflow off a date/time field?

I'm trying to create a workflow that triggers based on a date/time field: if someone fails to fill in the date/time field (which is not a required field, but should be filled in more times than not), they'll get an email asking them if they meant to leave it blank.

I was quite surprised: workflow doesn't seem to trigger based on date/time fields. I found an earlier forum post making a similar complaint, but I couldn't find any documentation specifically saying that workflow doesn't work with the date/time field.

I'm working with Sugar 5.2.0a, if that's any help to anyone. This doesn't seem to be an issue specific to Sugar 5.2.0a (the earlier post was about 5.0f), but if it is, I could upgrade.
