Cannot enter data into custom fields

Hi all,

I have an installation (v5.5.1 on ubuntu, apache, MySQL etc.) I have another instance also running on the same server (my demo version) that works seemingly without problems.

I created some custome fields, did an import that was successful (so it stated) then could not see the contacts. Only found an error when trying to create a contact under the account. This caused the Account page to fail with an error that it could not find the field. Deleting the new field worked, the contacts appeared and the account page was formatted without problem.

So rolling back to find the problem, I created a new field (unused fieldname for cleanliness) and added the field to both the edit and display view of the Contact.

Viewing and editing the contact show the field name without problem.

When I edit the contact and add data into the new custom field - I can save successfully, but no data is displayed. If I add data into the standard fields (such as mobile number) the data is saved.

Any ideas as to where I should look to get to the bottom of this? Is causing me a lot of frustration.

I've had this issue before and It was a permissions issue on the custom directory.
