Cannot login to sugarcrm - hieroglyphics and not html returned - strange error

Strange error accesing crm / cannot login to - hieroglyphics and not html returned

I've been using sugarcrm for about 4 months now and all was well until I tried to log in a few days ago. All I get is hieroglyphics - the screen shot shows what I mean.

I tried restarting apache and mysql. I have tried installing another instance of sugarcrm on a new mysql db on the same machine but I get the same thing.

I had a look through some of the sugarcrm db tables and things seem ok.

If I stop mysql I get an error saying cannot connect to mysql but no hieroglyphics.

Other sites on the same server using mysql and php work fine.

Any suggestions? Really need to get this working again.

PHP Version 5.2.11
Mysql 4.1.22

thanks very much. it was a problem with gzip compression.

i dont understand why it was working fine and suddenly stopped?!
