cannot send emails

When i try to send an email using sugarCRM open source to my gmail account i get the following error message:

Error emailing:Could not execute: /usr/sbin/sendmail

Please help !

You need to check whether sendmail is enabled in your system (has nothing to do with Sugar). Set up SMTP rather than sendmail - this will work with Win and Linux.

Go to the admin section - email settings - email transfer agent or set it up directly in the email module (it's then valid for you only).

I am wondering why smtp should work and not sendmail? In my case, I can't make smtp work (for gmail) but sendmail works just fine. What is the difference between the two? Why should I use one over the other?

If sendmail works then ok. But the original question was about sendmail not working.
However - despite many mails from Samir - my gmail smtp (5.0h) doesn't work either, there is always an error connecting to server (I'm using GoogleApps, that's why I think). Thunderbird, Evolution and Outlook work fine with the same settings.

Sendmail has other issues - in order to set sendmail up properly you need to configure your mail headers properly. Otherwise you mails will be (often) rejected by relay servers and/or spam filters. This is the short version. I had a couple of issues until I switched to smtp. Now it is slower but my mails go through at least.

Sorry if this is off-topic (I may have misunderstood the initial thread), but should 5.1 work with IMAPing to gmail? I can find no clear answers on this. I'm using a regular gmail account (not google apps) and it just won't work. Should I expect that it can work or just write it off and say it's a bug in Sugar?

It does work. Look for messages from sghandi. He explains it a couple of times.
