Can't find the documentation for $contact_name

Anyone know where there's any documentation for use of Email Template variables, such as $contact_name? I can't find much thru Google searches or SugarCRM Forum searches.

I'm trying to use $contact_name from within an Email Template (not Email Campaign). Is $contact_name generated from the first TO: address? Does the programming look at the relationship thru the email address to get the contact record's name? Anyone know the logic behind the selection of this variable?
