Question Changing template causes irrecoverable error

I'm facing an irrecoverable error whenever I change the control panel template using the drop down menu.
Once the change is applied, I am unable to switch anything back to default. The image below shows what the dashboard looks like. So far the only option I have when this problem occures is to completely uninstall and reinstall the application which (quick vent of frustration: is really f@#*ing annoying and bizarre).

Is there something I am missing? I've been searching this help section for a bit trying to find a similar topic and I do apologize if this has already been discussed.
    I appreciate any input.

It seems the folders cache, themes and custom are not writable.
Figure that out and try again.

I have had the same problem. Setting permissions on [Cache] , [custom] , and [themes] recursively to 755 solved it. Problem is, anytime we change themes to another one, it reverts back and we have to reset all to 755 again.
