counting closed tasks.

I'm an admin working in Sugar 6.3 RC2.
any suggestions on how to count the number of closed task records related to a record in my custom module using a calculated field within that record?
The problem comes down to detecting the presence or absence of a particular status in a drop down field, and I'm not sure that's even possible. You can access a key or a value of a drop down list associated with a drop down field, but I can't seem to find a way to access the actual value currently chosen by that field. From there, I'm pretty sure I can construct the rest.
