Create directory in linux--guide

I just install the community edition but i dont know too many things about linux. When i tryied to make a back up, a message came up for creating a writable directory. Which commands do i have to use in rPath Linux VMware Image 4.5.1d installaion?

Use the chmod command. You may also need the chown command to make the owner of the file the web site user.

I suggest you get a Linux primer (there are plenty on the web. Simply search for one!) Also, if I were in your shoes I would probably install thsi on a windows box. These two commands are considered very beginner stuff. Do you have a reason you are using Linux?
