Custom Field doesn't save

I've been tasked with maintaining an existing install of SugarCRM.

SugarProfessional Version 5.5.0 (Build 6653)
Apache 2.2.9
PHP 5.2.6
MySQL 5.0.45

There are two preexisting custom fields in Accounts. I've looked at the Studio and I see the fields in there, but I don't really know where to look beyond that.

The problem is that when you edit an account, put any value in one of the fields and save the account the field is empty. I have verified that the field name and value is included in the post during the save.

I continued to play with it and accidentally stumbled across this:

There was a second custom field set as an integer without a default value. If I put something in both fields the first custom field would save, if I put something only in the first custom field it would not save. I changed the second field to a textfield and it started working correctly.
