custom field won't allow empty string

I've created a new custom field in the Opportunities module and no matter what I do, it won't allow me to enter an empty string or to erase / leave the value blank. Whenever I save it, if it was an empty string, it goes back to what the previous value was.
My datatype is varchar. I'm in 4.5.1g Pro

Does it simple text box on your Edit form?
Try to run repair custom field function.

An error in source code of EditView.html can be the cause as well. Try to remove the field from the EditView, save it and then add again (through the Studio of course).

Also, are you able to change the field to a value other than a blank?

Verify that you haven't defined the field to not allow nulls.
