Custom fields disappearing

I have, I think, the latest SugarCRM - 4.01 - I am experiencing a frustrating problem that would appear to be a recurring theme throughout the forums.

I have carefully produced some custom fields for the contact pages - I have managed to get labels on the page layout - after much fiddling and head scratching.

I am totally unable to place a field onto the page without it vanishing as soon as I save the layout - quite a problem.

Secondly I am getting the impression that any new custom fileds are excluded from 'search' is this true - if so, it makes a mockery of the whole thing, really.

We recently installed 3.5.1 and are having the same problem with custom contact fields. Does the lack of replies to this ticket mean that there is a solution out there that we just can't find?
