Customize sugar open source?

Hi,

I just started using Sugarcrm open source version, I am wondering if i am able to customize some of the things in sugar, say I want to hide Account column in the Contact Listing details. And when user add in new Contact, I want to make First name, last name, phone and email compulsory files, currently only Last Name is compulsory..
