Default Database time vs Sugar time - date_created

I need to use time of creation of company opportunities. My database records a time a couple of hours early, as if it was set on European time.

Is the date_created field set to use Greenwich time, and then the systems uses the users time zone to display the right time?
Or did I mess up the installation?

Are the database and sugar on different servers? If they are make sure they are set to lookup an NTP server to synch the time.

The dates in the database are all GMT. They are converted to the user timezone at display time.
