Database unavailable

I am running ubuntu with apache2, php5, and mysql. For some reason, the Sugar installer keeps saying Database Support was not found. It tells me where to find my php.ini file. MySQL is installed and should be working. I did sudo apt-get install mysql-server and then sudo apt-get install php5-mysql. Port 3306 is open on my router and webmin says MySQL is running. Any ideas?

Also, for the modules and cache directories, what permissions do you recommend. I did 777, but this may be too insecure. When I tried 766 the installer would not work.

Sounds like your PHP configuration doesn't have the MySQL client enabled.

Take a look at your current PHP config by creating a test PHP script with phpinfo() in it and that should tell you whether or not it is enabled.
