Delete existing field

I use the contacts module with new fields added.
I would like to delete some existing fields, not the new I have created, but it seems that I can't.

Why can't we delete existing fields?

You can delete custom fields but not built in fields due upgrade safe purpose.
You may only remove the field from layouts.
