Disable but not remove sub panel relationship

Hi,

I have two custom modules that have a Many2Many relationship so that they show sub-panels of each other.

I've been asked to disable the link between items in the subpanels but keep the link visible.

It's like clicking the 'rem' button provided but instead of removing the link, it's still visible but with a 'broken' status.

This is wanted so users can see prior links even if they are now 'removed'

Any idea where I would start coding this? Do I need a logic hook?
