Display Currency Symbol

I've created a custom module that contain numerous currency type fields.

When displaying a record in Detail View the currency amount is simply '500.00' or '10.00'. I wish for the dollar symbol to be displayed as well, e.g '$500.00' or '$10.00'. The system will only be operating in a single currency.

I've played around with the vardefs file (..seems extreme..) but have had no luck yet. This is probably something quick and easy for your pros out there...
