dropdowns not saving or showing

I have created a new dropdown in contacts and added them to the 'edit view' and the 'detail view'.

When I select the dropdown in edit view and save, it reverts back to the top choice (which I have named 'unknown'). Also, 'unknown' does not appear in the detail view either!

Any help really appreciated.

Bizarrely, if you choose some of the other items on the drop down, they show up and save, but some don't???
