e-mailing to saved search groups

I'm new to Sugar CRM, but am familiar with Goldmine. In Goldmine I was able to run a query and then send e-mails to the contacts the query displayed. So far I haven't been able to figure out how to do this same thing in Sugar. For example I would like to be able to search for all the active contacts living in PA and send them an e-mail. I have checked out the campaign module and can see how it could probably be done through there, but I was hoping for something a little simpler than having to attach each contact to a campaign. Any suggestions?

The campaign module is the way to do it. There isn't an equally simple way to pull up a subset of the database and perform an e-mail merge as you can in GM.

In the same token, you get some nice analysis tools related to the campaign that you don't get in GM, which makes the effort more worthwhile.
