Editing "Name Field" fails in Leads View

After importing several large batches of records into Leads, I am unable to edit and save corrections to the "Name" field. [other fields can be edited]. Even when creating new leads, the "Name" field remains blank.

It appears that the field has become "ReadOnly" which I have been unable to turn off.

I have tried running the quick repair as well as clearing caches.

I have been able to fix the problem by ensuring that the last name field is viewable/editable in the [Admin] Edit Lead View Layout. Once that was done, I was successful in changing the Name Field by editing the Last Name to effect the changes in the Name Field
