Email setup issue

Hi all. I have read through a multitude of threads regarding email set up and the problems that seem to exist. It appears to be a bit of a minefield as one has mentioned.

My issue is with the inbound email.

When I try to set up Gmail IMAP I get nowhere. It times out when chhosing trash/sent folders. If I enter "trash" and "sent" into the folder fields and then test settings, it merely times out. AND grinds sugar entirely to a halt I might add until it finishes that one task (regardless of whether I close the browser down and reopen).

I am given a MAJOR clue however when I try (and fail) to set up POP3. I know POP3 is now frowned upon but I altered the code in the php_override to allow it.
I have enetered my account details. And despite entering the password, if I test settings I get the message;

"POP3 Authentication cancelled
Please check your settings and try again."

So I enter my password once more and I get "Your POP3 test connection was successful."

However when I now go to check my emails from within the email module, nothing happens. I then go back to the setp up and get the same "POP3 Authentication cancelled...."

I've just checked the error log and this came up;

"[13-Jul-2011 15:46:03] PHP Warning: fsockopen() [<a href='function.fsockopen'>function.fsockopen</a>]: unable to connect to mail.xxxxxxxxxxxxx.co.uk:25 (Connection timed out) in /home/xxxxxx/public_html/sugar/include/phpmailer/class.smtp.php on line 165"
