Default Email Templates: How to merge

Sorry I'm not sure of all the OS stuff but I think this question should be easy to answer without that technical stuff.

I've made an email template for a form information email to send to clients. I composed the email copy and added all those feilds for first name, last name, business name etc... But how do I impliment them?

    Here's what I do:

I go to Contacts and select a contact name, then I select Compose Email.

When the email module opens I see my contact's email address in the To: field.

Under options I select Email template.

What it does is load my template with the fields but not the information in the feilds

Now I use mail merge with Word all the time and with that I use a data source. Do I need a data source for Sugar email templates too? If so where do I add it.

Also wouldn't it be better if It just takes all the info that I added to the contact such as name and mailing address and automatically fill in those fields in the mail module?

    Thanks in advance
