Email "Test Settings" fails

I've been trying to create an email account, but whenever I "Try Settings" I get a window saying:

TEST SETTINGS
Server bug: non-empty initial PLAIN challenge
Please check your settings and try again.

What should I do? I checked the account parameters, and they are OK; in fact, I can download mail from that account with gmail.com.

I just updated from CE 5.0.0d to 5.0.0e, but the problem remains.
