emailtemplate.js line 49 error.. insert buttons cause error on campaign email

Problem1: creating a campaign email, the "insert variable" and "insert tracker URL" fields and buttons are visible.. yet when position my cursor in the body area/.. for instance - they type "dear" and then go to "INSERT BUTTON" to insert name - nothing happens. and at bottom left of page is a yellow caution - that provides the error below -
any clues?
and I get the same error, no matter what variable I try to insert - or what Tracker URL i try to insert... in my prior version of SUgarCRM community this worked fine!
Problem 2 - may be related - when I go to EMAILS tab, and select COMPOSE - another "undefined is null or not an object pop up window appears - can not send the email... see error log below..
