Default Empty space, sqswait.gif and the word "false" displayed at the top of the screen

This is a strange problem, I don't even know how to describe it so I have attached a screen capture. When I select a tab such as Leads or Opportunities, I get an area of empty space between the title and the search form with the word "false" and a spinning star icon (sqswait.gif) in it.

I've looked in the PHP template for that page and I can't even see anything that comes between the title and the search form that could be generating this.

I've compared the displayed html page source with the Sugar Demo version - no difference between them that I can see, and again nothing like an include or an iframe that could contain these odd items.

I've searched the forum for other similar problems of which there are two, neither thread actually contains an answer to the problem.

    Any ideas?

    Pete

Shot in the dark, but the spinning star is part of the javascript ajax field completion. And the only field completion you have is the mass update at the bottom (javascript can dump stuff all over the screen).

No idea if that helps but....
