Error Importing Outlook Contacts

I am new to Sugar, I just installed the Sugar 5.2 Community Edition first time. Tried to import contacts from outlook express. I followed the steps and put it into comma/windows format. When I went to import, it said that none of the contacts were uploaded and then gave me a link to check my errors.

When I clicked the link it went to "page not found".

I read over some material and I never changed my permissions to the required directories. I changed those and then tried to import again. No luck in importing the contacts or seeing the error page details.

I then changed all the directories under sugar to 777. I could no longer access sugar at all as it was all "page not found". So I am in the process of changing it back to 755 or I will reinstall. No big problem. I have no data in yet.

Why can't I get my contacts imported? Is it because they are not matching up right? Or do I not have the right directory permissions. Did I install this wrong because my error pages don't exist...

This is unlikely to be a permissions problem. I'd export as a plain csv file (make sure you set the correct delimiters - " , etc) Then goto the import and (seeing as its a new install) just try mapping a few of the fields then try the import, if that works try mapping others

This is a common problem with the import module as it is not very user friendly. You can do a directly database import, however if you don't know or understand the DB structure it will render your DB useless. I can assist you please PM for additional information.

To add to rbroomfield's comments above, most import problems are usually traced back to a problem within the source data.

Common issues are:

Errant commas in one or more records
Errant new line markers in one or more records
Inconsistent delimiting of the values, e.g. Strings fields delimited with quotes, but numeric values not delimited

As was suggested, try fewer fields and fewer records.

Below is a sample CSV that should work:

john, smith, 123 Main Street, Anaheim, CA, 91234, ABC Inc
jane, doe, 456 Broadway, Tustin, CA, 98765, IBM Corp

If the above doesn't work, then I would start to suspect something within Sugar.
