Extending Roles

I have extended other core modules just fine, but I am having a hard time extending the Roles module.

objective: Add custom fields which will extend role management for our purposes.

what i have done:
- added table: acl_roles_cstm (id_c, limit_low_c, limit_high_c)
- added 2 new records to fields_meta_data to relate them
- added vardefs in /custom/modules/ACLRoles/Ext/Vardefs/vardefs.ext.php
- added the fields in /custom/modules/ACLRoles/metadata/editviewdefs.php


what is happening:
- I can see the new labels & fields in edit view
- Upon saving, the 2 additional fields are not saved to acl_roles_cstm


any ideas?

What is the need on customizing the ACL modules?
