Fields - deleting and rearranging

Is there a way to hide/make inactive/delete fields in modules that I don't want? I.e. in contacts, can I delete birthdate?

Also, is there a way to reorder the fields?

I've worked out the rearranging but it won't let me reduce the number of items in the layout - i'm using detail view.

I'm also wondering why I can't enter numbers in new field names?

these are such basic questions that I fear you have invested no time in reading the manual. You should read it cover to cover if you are going to use sugar for any production tasks and need to modify it.
