Default "The following files need to be writable"

When I try to upgrade from 4.2 to 4.5 via my web browser is lists a whole bunch of files that need to be writable. The only way I can think of doing this is to chmod every file in the list, or all files, to 777 or something so I can get this upgrade to work but that seems like a security nightmare. All of the files are owned by "root" and group "root". What do you recommend?

    I'm running pn Ubuntu 6.06, Apache2, PHP 5.

I'm having the same issue with an upgrade from 4.0.1 to 4.5.0d. Were you able to get past this error?

I think I got this to work. I used ssh to chmod 777 (all files) and ran the updated wizard from IE6 on my PC. When it is done I'll chmod back to 755 (all files) then 644 (*.php files).
