Gone, how? Did you look in the database to make sure things didn't just get marked deleted? Are your systems in a virtual machine and it got rolled back? Maybe you can roll it forward?

But if it's neither of these things and you don't have a backup I can't think of many options.

It's not real hard to schedule back ups of a database. So, before anything else you should take the time to do that now so this doesn't happen again.

i dont know how to check the database or do any of the things that you just mentioned... please undertand i am not a technically savvy individual, but not a total idiot either. Today I smiply logged in and over 35 contacts are missing and every single activity is gone. I've since paid sugar $119 to "upgrade" so i can get help, but any ideas you have would be appreciated... is there some way that I can "restore" the data to a prior date?

Well, the only way you could 'restore' without a backup would be if the data was only set to deleted rather than actually having the database completely lose the data. Is this an inhouse installation or is it hosted? If it's hosted, I don't know what you'd do. If it's in house then it depends on what the back-end database system is.
