Help in Backup prococedure

I am running a Ubuntu server with SugarCrm 4.5.0f
trying to perform a backup fails on

Backup directory does not exist, and could not be created.
Backup directory exists, but is not writable.

I use /var/backup to try and back
and made the proper write permision

any one can help with finding source of failure???
