Help how to use the opportunities in Sugar?

Here is a dummy's question: Let's say I have created an opportunity linked to a contact with some documents and activities also attached. If I want to change the status of teh opprotunity (from qualified to quote for instance), the Sugar user guide tells me to create a new opportunity. Sounds silly does'nt it ? How will Sugar differentiate between the two opportunities? How will Sugar be able to calculate the good sales pipe if i have now 2 opportunities? Isn't it possible to have instead a unique opportunity with a moving status and an history of past status and documents, projects, documents attached to these past status? How do you manage that. am i missing a big spot? thanks for u help

You can simply open that Opportunity and edit the status.

Indeed i can edit the status of the opportunity but then the history of the opportunity is lost. I mean i would like to have an history of past status of the opportunity with documents attached to those past status.
For instance: if i had a meeting with a contact in the qualification phase of the opportunity a few months ago, i would like to capture this information in the history of the opportunity and to link the meeting minutes to that phase. If i simply change the status of the opportunity i can of course have access to the meeting minutes but i can't now at wich phase of the opportunity the meeting occured.

AFAIK, there is nothing in the Opportunity tables to support your requirements. May be a workflow or a custom hook could help you to update a custom field, (let's call it 'related sales stage') in all modules related to opportunity. Then you could add this custom field in the list view of all those modules and (being submodules for the opportunity module) and just sort by this field. This way you will have an overview of what was related to each stage.
