Help for newbie!

Sugar looks great, but i need it to mail merge, import from Act and receive inbound e-mail and i am having no luck in achieving any of these. I keep finding modules, but all seem to be out of date as they don't work with the latest version. The inbound e-mail on the latest version doesn't seem to work either, at least it doesn't for me and there is another thread that would suggest its not just because i am a novice that i can't get it working.

I'd love to tinker and learn along the way, but i just can't seem to get a foothold. Nothing that i am finding here seems to be helping make this easier.

Any ideas on help resources for a complete newbie? or am i better off sticking to Act?

We do have a Mail Merge capabilities, we also have Inbound Email.
